Extension Organizational Development (EOD) is excited to announce the Dr. Richard T. Liles Leadership Seminar Series, a new professional development opportunity open to all Extension employees, regardless of program area, responsibilities, or role. The goal is to provide leadership development training for all employees within Extension. This is the first part of comprehensive leadership development training for the organization.

Dr. Richard T. Liles Leadership Seminar Series is hosted in honor of Dr. Richard T. Liles. During his thirty-six year career at North Carolina State University, Dr. Liles served with distinction in a variety of significant leadership roles.

  • He was first employed as a 4-H Extension Agent (North Carolina Cooperative Extension) for Wake County on August 1, 1969.
  • In 1974, Dr. Liles was promoted to Extension 4-H Specialist and relocated to the NC State campus.
  • In 1980, Dr. Liles was promoted to State Leader of Training for North Carolina Cooperative Extension and Associate Professor in the Department of Adult and Community College Education.
  • In 1994, Dr. Liles was named Department Extension Leader for the Department of Agricultural and Extension Education.
  • In 1997, he was promoted to Associate Head of the Department of Agricultural and Extension Education.
  • Beginning in January of 1999, Dr. Liles was asked to serve as Interim Department Head of Agricultural and Extension Education and Interim Assistant Director for NCCE.
  • In October 2000, Dr. Liles was named Director of Personal and Organizational Development (POD).

Dr. Liles retired from North Carolina Cooperative Extension in 2006, after thirty six years of dedicated service.

Dr. Richard T. Liles Leadership Seminar Series will be a monthly leadership seminar series delivered virtually via Zoom in the fall of 2024, covering the top leadership topics as identified in the N.C. Cooperative Extension Leadership Development Programs Survey that was administered via Google Forms in April 2024.

The leadership seminar series will be carried out by the Extension Organizational Development (EOD) Coordinator and members of the EOD Advisory Council, as stated in the Richard T. Liles Leadership Fund Memorandum of Understanding.

Dr. Richard T. Liles Leadership Seminar Series will be held on the third Friday of every month from 9:00-10:00 a.m. virtually via Zoom. Dates, topics, and guest speakers include:

  • Friday, 8/16Building the Vision for Transformational Change with Dr. Mitch Owen, CEO of Mitchen Incorporated
  • Friday, 9/20Leading Change, Leading Transformation with Dr. Marshall Stewart, Senior Vice President for Executive Affairs, University Engagement & Partnerships and Chief of Staff at Kansas State University
  • Friday, 11/15Inspiring & Influencing with Dr. Nolo Martinez, Founder and Co-President of mano-Y-ola LLC.
  • Friday, 12/20Communication with Dr. Valorie McAlpin, Former Director, Center for Teaching and Learning at UNC Charlotte, Former Associate Dean, College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at University of Maryland College Park, and Former Director of Communications for College of Agriculture at NC A&T State University.

Registration is available in XLMS. Employees who attend all four sessions live will be awarded the Liles Leadership digital badge upon completion of the seminar series.
